Why GFRP is Becoming the Material Choice in 2023, From Code to Field
GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) is becoming the material of choice in a variety of applications due to its exceptional strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. These qualities make GFRP ideal for use in the construction industry, where it is increasingly being used as a replacement for traditional materials such as steel.
One key reason for the growing popularity of GFRP is the fact that it meets or exceeds the requirements set forth in various building codes and standards. GFRP is widely recognized as a reliable and safe material, and it is often used in applications where the highest levels of performance and reliability are required such as bridges and major infrastructures.
In addition to its code-compliant performance, GFRP has also proven to be a superior material in the field. Its low weight, low conductivity and high strength make it easy to handle and install, and its corrosion resistance means that it can withstand harsh environments without degrading over time. GFRP is also highly resistant to cyclic loading, making it ideal for use in structures that may be subjected to severe loading conditions.
Overall, the combination of code compliance, field performance, and long-term durability make GFRP an attractive choice for a wide range of applications in the construction industry. As such, it is becoming the material of choice for many owners, engineers, architects, and contractors.
Speakers
Borna Hajimiragha
Master degree in Composite Material, M.Eng, CEO of MST Rebar Inc.
Borna Hajimiragha is an engineer and CEO in the fiberglass reinforcement industry. Borna began his studies in this field almost 15 years ago. His Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in composite materials along with over a decade of hands on laboratory pultrusion and field experience has brought him to the forefront as a widely respected expert in the field. Borna currently resides in Toronto, Ontario and is the CEO at MST Rebar Inc., a GFRP Rebar production facility. Borna has worked on different thermosetting resin as well as different thermoplastic resin and he was one of the first to pultrude a thermoplastic Rod.
Borna has joined CSA in 2015 and ACI and ASTM in 2018 and he brings over a decade of experience, under his performance MST-BAR was the first Fiberglass rebar to become an ICC approved product. He is also an active member in Canadian Standard Association, Borna is a perfect candidate to work with different committees for improvement and advancement in codes because of his deep knowledge in material, pultrusion and rebar with combined knowledge in both Civil engineering and Mechanical engineering.
With over a decade of experience in implementing the use of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Rebar, Borna is a perfect candidate to take your existing reinforced concrete design and convert it into the most durable and sustainable design with implementation of composite material.
